Starting secondary school is a big step, and for the young people in Bright Lights, KEY+ Transitions gave them the opportunity to build confidence, develop independence and strengthen friendships.

The group chose to plan a trip to the Metrocentre, filling the day with activities they were excited about. Together, they organised a visit that included bowling, the arcades, bumper cars, bubble tea, lunch and of course, a few stops at their favourite shops. Every part of the day reflected what the group wanted to do, giving them to chance to make decisions together and take ownership of their project.

Throughout the experience, the young people developed important skills that will support them in the future. From presenting their ideas to a panel and speaking to people they didn’t know, to listening carefully, solving problems together and working together, they challenged themselves in new situations and discovered that they were capable of more than they first thought.

The most memorable moment of the project for the group was winning a cuddly octopus from the arcae grabber machine after just a few attempts. Other highlights included racing around the bumper cars, exploring the arcades and enjoying the freedom to make choices together throughout the day.

Looking back, the group would encourage other young people to take part in KEY+, describing it as a fun experience.
