We’re excited to share this blog from Emily, who joined The Key for a week of work experience and explored the world of marketing, creativity and youth work.
Before I started my work experience, I was feeling nervous but also excited. This is because I have never done anything like this before, so I didn’t know what to expect. During the week I designed a Social Action resource for young people, I enjoyed this task because it was creative and helped me learn a lot about what Social Action is. I learnt that when designing for companies and organisation’s there is a ‘brand’ you have to stick to, this is because any resource that the brand makes must be recognisable to the organisation. I did find this difficult as I couldn’t stop myself from adding things to what I had already done, however, in my meeting with Robyn I learnt that minimalism is better that maximalism when it comes to designing resources and that ‘less is more’, this really helped me when designing the resources as it helped me not to add as much and to keep it simple while still using The Keys colours and designs.
It surprised me that in marketing there is a lot more to the creative aspect than I thought. This week has changed my aspect of marketing and has given me the idea that I might want to go into marketing in the future. In the future I know I want to do something creative in my career, until now I had never even thought of doing marketing as my job but now, I’m thinking more about going down that route. It felt exciting that my work would contribute towards a project as I have never designed anything like this before.
This week I think I have developed more creativity and communication skills; this is because I had my first ‘meeting’ that discussed work as in the past I had only had meetings that discussed my weightlifting. I did also learn new Canva skills this week, I have previously used Canva on my own devices at home but that was just to play around with the tools that they had to offer, I learnt new ways to make the headings and text look certain ways which really helped me when designing the resources.
I found it fun and helpful to work in a team. This is because there was always someone there to help me if I was stuck with my work, but it was also fun as it was just nice to have conversations and get to know everyone. I have also learned that planning and being organised is very important in any work that you do. This is because knowing when you have things scheduled is great rather than relying on other people to know for you. It’s also good to have an organised design so it’s not confusing for anyone that may be reading it.
Overall, my favourite moment of the week was designing the resources as it allowed me to be creative, but I also enjoyed my sandwich which was very tasty; it consisted of chicken, gammon, cheese, cucumber, tomatoes and mayo! I am proud that my designs are going to contribute to a real project where many people will see them. I will take away the creativity skills and the Canva skills from this week so that I can use them in my career or anytime in the future when I need to design something I can use them. Lastly, if I had to describe this week in three words, they would be fun, welcoming, and creative.
