KEY+ Group: Cadets for the Community
As part of their journey with Northumbria Police Cadets, this group of college students set out to make a difference close to home. Their mission? To support two local toddler groups that provide a safe, fun space for young children – but often struggle with resources.
After discovering that the toddler groups were using damaged play mats and lacked funding to replace them, the cadets took action. They began collecting donated toys, cleaning them up for reuse, and decided to use their KEY+ funding to buy brand-new, child-friendly mats.
But this project was about more than just giving – it was also about growing. The cadets developed confidence by talking to parents and carers, learned how to ask thoughtful questions, and worked as a team to plan, problem-solve and take on responsibilities. For many of them, it was a chance to manage anxiety in a real-world setting and discover their strengths in action.
One of the members was nervous when it came to talking to the parents and asking questions but ended up saying it was the best part of their day! Another member loved visiting the toddler groups, whilst one enjoyed cleaning the toys – and playing with them too.
When things got tricky, the team pulled together. If someone was absent, they stepped up, read each other’s slides, and made sure the work still got done. They learned to support one another, manage nerves (especially when presenting), and take real pride in their impact.
The group said they were most proud of “helping people” and “getting the money for the project” – winning the pitch was a big moment!
Their efforts brought comfort, colour, and care to the toddler groups – and left a lasting impact on the cadets themselves.
